Without support, navigating the aftermath of sexual, relational or childhood trauma can feel both exhausting and isolating. The scars are often invisible. It can be hard for others to understand that it is not just about memories—it’s a physical state that can linger in the nervous system for years, leaving you feeling tethered to the past — even when you are trying to move forward. But it doesn’t have to stay that way.

There truly is so much life waiting for you on the other side of trauma. With specialized support, you can move beyond a state of staying strong to cultivate a life where you are finally free to thrive. It is a beautiful, life-changing return to yourself—where you feel steady in your body, clear in your mind, and ready to embrace the life you were always meant to live.

Melissa Sandford LCPC is a licensed therapist with 10+ years of experience providing gentle, effective support, specializing in PTSD related to sexual, childhood and relational trauma.

The Path Forward

CALMING CONSTANT ALERTNESS • Learning how to strategically soothe your nervous system so it no longer has to stay braced. Over time, this creates more space for rest, ease, and a sense of internal safety.

MOVING OUT OF DISCONNECTION • What once felt like numbness or avoidance begins to shift as you reconnect with yourself and feel more present in your daily life.

RELEASING THE HOLD OF THE PAST • As we process distressing events, memories become less intrusive and less charged, no longer shaping your reactions or sense of safety in the present.

SHIFTING RELATIONAL PATTERNS • Patterns around trust, intimacy, and connection begin to change, allowing for more secure, reciprocal connection.

SOFTENING THE INNER CRITIC • The harsh, self-critical voice rooted in shame begins to ease, creating space for a more compassionate and supportive relationship with yourself.

We’ll begin gently, at your pace. During our first session there is no pressure to dive into the hard parts right away. We’ll talk about what you’ve been experiencing, what you hope to feel differently, and I’ll explain how we’ll work together to keep your nervous system steady.

Modalities

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy for PTSD and trauma. It helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they are no longer experienced as emotionally overwhelming or present. This reduces the emotional charge so you can finally inhabit the present without the past constantly intruding.

We work to identify and dismantle the unhelpful thoughts like shame, self-blame, or the feeling of being broken that trauma often leaves behind. These old scripts aren’t telling the whole story, and they can feel painful—we work to replace them with a narrative that reflects your actual strength, worth, and resilience.

Because trauma is a physical experience, healing must be too. Through somatic work and gentle breathing techniques, we learn to 'listen' to patterns of bracing, tension, or numbness. By gently processing physical remnants of trauma, we teach your body that the threat is actually over, allowing you to finally settle into safety.

Healing requires a vision of where you are going. SFBT keeps our work anchored in the present and aimed at the future. We identify the small, meaningful changes that lead to a balanced life, ensuring that every session leaves you with more clarity, a steadier sense of self, and a deeper trust in your ability to navigate the world.
